Russian citizens enter the Republic of Georgia visa-free and can stay for up to one year, but since 1 January 2026 entry also requires a health policy that meets Government Resolution No. 602 (Decree 602). This page explains what that means for a Russian passport holder: the policy is the same as for everyone else, it is checked at Dariali (Verkhny Lars) and Sarpi as well as at the airports, and it can be bought in English or in Russian from any phone.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Who is required to have tourist insurance when entering Georgia?

From January 1, 2026, insurance is mandatory for all foreign citizens entering Georgia under Georgian Government Resolution No. 602 of 26.12.2025.

Can I buy travel insurance if I am already in Georgia?

Yes. You can take out the policy while you are already in Georgia — your citizenship and where you buy it make no difference. The start date can be today: cover begins on the date you choose and the policy arrives by email within a minute of payment.

What does the IRAO Visitor Insurance policy cover?

The policy covers emergency medical expenses during your trip — from food poisoning to injuries. Light and Standard tariffs provide €10,000 in coverage, Premium — €15,000. For policyholders over 65, expense reimbursement is 50% under IRAO's terms. There is no deductible on any plan — expenses are reimbursed without a co-payment.

What language will my insurance policy be in?

The official IRAO policy is issued in English or Georgian regardless of the language you used to apply — this is a requirement of the IRAO insurer, not something 100doc.ge controls.

How quickly will I receive the policy after payment?

After payment, the policy is sent to the email address you provided when signing up.

What payment methods are available?

Payment is accepted by bank card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

Can I get a refund if my trip is cancelled?

Refunds of the insurance premium are governed by IRAO's insurance rules: the statutory right to withdraw from a contract without giving a reason generally does not apply to policies of 14 days or less. The service fee for issuing the policy is non-refundable, since the service is rendered in full at the moment the policy is issued. Full terms are set out in the Refund Policy.

Do I need to print the policy?

No, the policy can be shown at the border either electronically (on your phone) or printed.

What's the difference between the Light, Standard, and Premium tariffs?

Light and Standard provide the same €10,000 insurance coverage — Standard additionally includes priority support via Telegram and WhatsApp. Premium provides increased coverage of €15,000.

Where can I buy tourist insurance for entry to Georgia online?

You can buy the policy right here on 100doc.ge: IRAO Visitor Insurance (Vienna Insurance Group) from €0.99 per day, with coverage up to €15,000. No registration is required — the policy arrives by email about a minute after payment by bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

How much does insurance for a trip to Georgia cost?

From €0.99 per day on the Light plan, €1.99 on Standard and €2.99 on Premium. Coverage is €10,000 on Light and Standard and €15,000 on Premium. A 7-day trip starts at €6.93 and a 30-day trip at €29.70 per person.

Does this policy meet the mandatory insurance requirement for entry?

Yes. The requirement is set by Georgian Government Resolution No. 602 of 26 December 2025: from 1 January 2026 foreign nationals entering Georgia must hold health insurance with at least the prescribed minimum sum insured. The policy is issued by IRAO, a licensed Georgian insurance company that is part of Vienna Insurance Group; its sum insured and risks meet the Resolution, with no deductible. The policy is issued in Georgian and English — the form border officers expect.

How much does insurance for Georgia cost for 7, 14, 30 or 90 days?

Per person: Light — €6.93 for 7 days, €13.86 for 14, €29.70 for 30, €89.10 for 90 days; Standard — €13.93 / €27.86 / €59.70 / €179.10; Premium — €20.93 / €41.86 / €89.70 / €269.10. Priced per day (from €0.99), children pay the same, no deductible.

The short version

Insurance for Georgia for Russian citizens: the same Decree 602 policy every foreign visitor needs — at least 30,000 GEL of cover for the whole stay, issued in Georgian and English — bought online from €0.99 a day. Citizenship does not change the rule or the price; what changes is the border you use, and the policy is checked at Dariali and Sarpi exactly as at Tbilisi airport in Georgia, the country in the Caucasus.

Visa-free stay and the insurance rule are two separate things

A Russian passport allows entry to Georgia without a visa and a stay of up to one year, and that has not changed. What changed on 1 January 2026 is the insurance requirement, which applies to every foreign national regardless of citizenship or visa status. The two rules are checked separately: the visa-free stay is granted by the passport itself, while the policy is checked as a document in its own right — by dates, by sum insured and by language.

Decree 602 does not look at the passport

The Resolution names no countries. It requires a health policy with at least 30,000 GEL of cover, written in Georgian or English, valid from the day of entry to the day of departure, and it lists a narrow set of exemptions: diplomatic and service passports, accredited mission staff, persons under international agreements, international transport drivers. A Georgian residence permit is not listed there, so a permit holder needs the policy too. For a Russian citizen this means the same policy, the same price and the same check as for a visitor from Germany or Kazakhstan.

Which border you use: Dariali, Sarpi or an airport

Most Russian citizens arrive one of three ways: by car or bus through the Dariali crossing (Verkhny Lars on the Russian side), by bus or on foot through Sarpi from Turkey, or by air — direct or via Istanbul and Yerevan. The policy is checked at all of them in the same way: the officer confirms that the dates cover the stay, that the sum insured is at least 30,000 GEL and that the document is in Georgian or English. Georgian policies are verified through the electronic register by passport number, so a PDF on the phone is enough even without a printer or mobile data.

  • Dariali (Verkhny Lars): queues are long, buy the policy before you reach the checkpoint.
  • Sarpi: the same check as at the airport, on the Georgian side of the crossing.
  • Airports: the policy is read at passport control; a screenshot of the PDF works.

How to buy and pay from anywhere, in English or in Russian

The policy is bought online in about a minute: choose the dates and the number of travellers, photograph the passport, and pay by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The PDF in Georgian and English arrives by email and is valid from the date you selected, so it can be bought at home, on the road or already inside Georgia. Prefer Russian? Switch the language at the top of the page — the same policy is issued on the Russian version of the site, with support in Russian.

If your child gets sick

A policy is issued from birth and children cost no extra. We settle with the clinic directly — you do not have to find the money on the spot:

  • high fever, respiratory infections, tonsillitis, ear infection, bronchitis
  • rotavirus, intestinal infections and food poisoning
  • falls, bruises and fractures — on the playground, in the mountains, at the sea
  • animal and insect bites — emergency rabies and tetanus vaccination
  • acute allergic reaction and heatstroke

The 24/7 support line points you to the nearest children’s clinic and calls an ambulance.

Do Russian citizens need insurance to enter Georgia?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 every foreign national needs a health policy under Decree 602 — at least 30,000 GEL of cover, in Georgian or English, for the whole stay. Russian citizens are no exception, and the visa-free regime does not replace it.

How long can Russian citizens stay in Georgia without a visa?

Up to one year on a Russian passport. The insurance policy must cover the actual stay; if you stay longer than planned, buy cover for the additional days before the first policy ends.

Is the policy the same for Russian citizens as for everyone else?

Yes. The IRAO policy through 100doc.ge is the same document at the same price from €0.99 a day; the Resolution does not distinguish by citizenship.

I am driving by car from Vladikavkaz through Verkhny Lars — is insurance checked there?

Yes, at the Georgian checkpoint at Dariali. The officer checks the dates, the sum insured and the language of the policy, verifying it through the register by passport number. Buy it before you join the queue; the PDF arrives by email within a minute.

We are two adults and a 7-year-old flying via Yerevan — do we all need a policy?

Yes, all three, including the child: the Resolution makes no exception for age. One order covers the whole family, and children are insured at the adult price with the same 30,000 GEL of cover each.

I plan to stay 6 months and then do a visa run — which dates do I insure?

Insure the full 6 months from the day of entry. After the visa run you re-enter as a new visitor and need a policy that covers the new stay; buy it before crossing back, from the road if necessary.

Can I buy the policy after landing in Tbilisi?

Yes. It has to exist before you reach passport control, not before you board. Many travellers buy it in the arrivals hall from a phone; the policy starts on the date you choose and is verified through the register.

Can I read the site and get the policy in Russian?

Yes. Switch the language at the top of the page: the Russian version of the site issues the same IRAO policy, and support is available in Russian. The policy document itself is always in Georgian and English, as the Resolution requires.

Does a Georgian residence permit change anything for me?

No. A residence permit does not exempt you from Decree 602: the exemptions are diplomats, accredited mission staff, persons under international agreements and international transport drivers, and permit holders are not among them.

What happens at the border if my policy has expired?

It is treated as no policy: you will be asked to buy a new one before entry or fined about €100. A new policy can be issued on the spot from a phone, from €0.99 a day, so the fine is easy to avoid.
